The Android L Operating System update for the Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10 is rumored to arrive in late October. The latest version of the Android operating system is rumored to launch alongside the upcoming Google Nexus 6. Based on previous releases, Google usually releases two versions of Android OS: one in the summer at the Google I/O event and another in the fall, usually in October alongside a new device from Google. Android L is reportedly the biggest Android version in history packed with more than 5,000 new Application Programming Interfaces (API). Following the footsteps of the Google Nexus 7, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S got their own treatment of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. The 15.1MB update is currently seeding to GSM/HSPA versions of both smartphones over the air. The update is a minor improvement over its predecessor. It includes the usual performance and stability fixes. Landscape mode however, will remain reserved for the Google Nexus 7.

With iOS 8 rolling out to devices worldwide, Apple TV also received to a major update today. Firmware version 6.2.1 brings new features to the tiny box, wrapped into a brand new user interface. The updated user interface features flat look, which brings its appearance in line with Apple iOS and OS X Yosemite.  The UI is available on third-generation Apple TV devices. Additional features include support for iCloud Photo and Family Sharing, as well as the addition of a Beats Music app to the fold. Users can now sign up for a two-week trial for Beats Music directly from their Apple TV. The new Apple TV firmware is available over-the-air. You can access it from the device’s settings menu.

BlackBerry have released an update to their popular BBM app for Android and iPhone. According to Jeff Gardaway, head of product and brand marketing for BBM, BBM now includes a new Find Friends feature that allows you to discover people you know that are also using BBM and invite them to your BBM contact list, from within the app.  The Find Friends feature will detect which contacts in your smartphone’s contact list are already using BBM, and allow you to quickly send them an invite to join your BBM contact list. For those contacts that don’t yet have BBM, you can invite them to download the app with an email or SMS invite. This is not a bad development and update from BlackBerry. However, we are still expecting that promised BBM Channels and Voice for Android and iOS devices to drop, perhaps in the BBM 2.0 that is in the works.
