Is this Samsungs first selfie phone

Image
The world is going selfie mad so its about time Samsung joined the craze - and the Galaxy Grand Prime is seemingly the phone its going to use to do it. The selfie -centric phone was leaked by Vietnamese site thegioididong.com, which both posted pictures and revealed some apparent specs. Those include a 5.0-inch 540 x 960 display, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM. The Galaxy Grand Prime apparently runs Android 4.4 KitKat and is said to be equipped with an 8MP main camera which can record video in 1080p, but the star of the show is the 5MP front-facing camera, leaving it better equipped for selfies than most mid-range phones. Cheap shots Rounding out the specs theres apparently 8GB of built in storage, a microSD card slot and a 2600 mAh battery. According to the source it will arrive in Vietnam in October with a price of less than 5 million VND (£146 / $236 / AU$262). As yet theres no word on if or when it will head west, but if it does it will b...

Android Modding 101 what you need to know about rooting your phone

Image
"Just root it" is something youve probably heard said if youve spent any meaningful time hanging around a hardcore Android user. But, unless youve spent too much time lingering in the darker corners of the internet, you probably get lost when people start comparing ROMs. As Android phones have taken off, rooting (the process of getting super access to your phone, and being able to change it as you see fit) has become an increasingly mainstream thing to do. The driving factor behind this is the manufacturers: to stamp their own seal on devices, big Android smartphone makers like Samsung, HTC and Sony put a skin on top of the regular Android OS, changing the look and feel, and often replacing stock Android apps with changed varieties. In the first case, then, some users dont appreciate the bloatware – theyd rather have a clean, unskinned version of Android, as they often run faster, and Googles apps are arguably superior to the manufacturers offerings. But ski...

A Bluetooth Hub That Turns Your Phone Into a Universal Remote

Image
In our weekly column on crowdfunded projects, we look at sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo to find new and interesting projects. Thats because in the last couple of years, some of the most exciting developments in technology have come not from the established players, but from small teams with big dreams - like the Pebble smartwatch and the Oculus Rift. One project hoping to make it big is the AnyMote Home - this small IR device can connect to your smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth, where a companion app can be used as a smart remote. The AnyMote has profiles of over 800,000 devices, and the makers say they are still adding more. Theres also a learning function, where you can teach it to recognise other IR remotes that are not already supported. The app can also integrate with services that support Wi-Fi, such as XBMC, Sonos and Roku. The way it works is simple - you just launch the app on your phone or tablet (both iOS and Android are supported), and connect to the...

Why Nokia Choose Windows Phone OS Instead of Android

Image
Nokias chief executive Stephen Elop have given a reason why Nokia didnt choose Android to replace Symbian  in 2010 when it decided to ditch  Symbian OS from its phones and replace it with the struggling Microsoft OS for mobile, Windows Phone OS. According to Elop, the choice he made was right and he and his team  are happy to have made the choice back in 2010 and still stands by it even now. He stated that Nokia decided not to go with Android because it seemed like and OS that would be totally dominated by one manufacturer which is what is happening now. He stated and implied that Samsung is totally controlling Android giving other phone manufacturers little or no chance at success as evident with what HTC is facing in the android space. In Stephen Elops words "Im very happy with the decision we made," he said. "What we were worried about a couple of years ago was the very high risk that one hardware manufacturer could come to dominate Android. We had a suspicion of who ...

BBM On Windows Phone

Image
Finally, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is now available for Android and iOS devices as promised by BlackBerry and it works so well and flawless on these devices. According to BlackBerry, 5 million people downloaded BBM within a space of 8hrs. The question is, what percentage of these people would be dumping their BlackBerry devices for Android or iPhone? Where does this leave BlackBerry? I believe it will in a way put BlackBerry in a not-so-good condition. BBM is a highly anticipated and revered messaging app and its not surprising to see the massive download rate by Android and iOS device users. If people, are dumping BlackBerry devices which already has BBM for Android and iPhone, how much more will Windows Phone device purchase take a hit? The effect would be felt  by Windows Phone manufacturers due to the fact that theres no BBM available for WP devices (e.g Nokia Lumia phones, HTC and Samsung phones with Windows OS) and people buy smartphones for the apps it supports. Ultimately,...

HTC Windows Phone 8S

Image
HTC WINDOWS PHONE 8S REVIEW HTCs second Windows Phone 8 device follows the same design as its bigger brother, the 8S, with a unique look and feel thats separate to the companys Android devices. Its another big bet on Windows Phone 8 for HTC and one that the company hopes will appeal to the masses as Microsoft continues its push to get Windows Phone devices into consumers hands. A run-of-the-mill 4.0” 480x800 display is what HTC graced the 8S with, and the 233ppi pixel density, while nothing exemplary, is still decent for your everyday tasks. The display sports good color presentation, and is sufficiently bright for comfortable outside viewing, with nice viewing angles, both horizontally and vertically. As it stands, HTCs 8S includes a 5-megapixel rear camera that isnt particularly notable. I found the results were fairly noisy. Low light performance is reasonable, but some images have an odd haze on them thats more akin to an Instagram filter than anything else. The 8S shoots at 4 mega...
