Apple has released a newly updated version of its Find My Friends app with an iOS 7-inspired redesign. The app was Apples last consumer-focused app to receive a redesign for iOS 7, though iAd Gallery and iTunes Connect retain their old look-and-feel. Other than the new design, Find My Friends does not appear to have any new features. Last week, Apple released updated versions of iBooks and iTunes U with similar redesigns. To review and download Find My Friends on the App Store click here. Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Despite all you can do with an iOS device, certain features that are standard on a Mac or PC have been elusive on Apple’s smartphones and tablets. With iOS 7, however, it looks like we can cross one of those omissions off the list: You can now unzip and view compressed files from within Mail. Originally, iOS flat-out ignored zip files—if you received one in an email or viewed it on the web, it showed up as an unrecognized file type, and that was that. But in iOS 4, Apple added the “Open In” function, which let you use third-party apps to open files that the OS couldn’t handle. This let programs like GoodReader handle file unzipping and dealing with other unrecognized document types, but it wasn’t perfect—try explaining to your tech unsavvy friend or family member that they need to download a specific app to open a file. iOS 7 elegantly addresses this problem: Now, when you receive a compressed file in Mail, tapping on it will unzip the file and present it as a series of docume...

The three digital download destinations were pitted against one another in the Pfeiffer Reports "2013 App Store Maturity Shootout." All three stores were compared in four key categories: search, discovery assistance, an evaluation grid maturity score, and user experience friction. When the overall results for each mobile application store were tallied by Pfeiffer, Apple was the clear top choice, earning a score of 53.1 out of 100. That handily beat Google Play, which scored 40.9, as well as the Amazon Appstore, coming in with a score of 34.1. Pfeiffer still sees a great deal of room for improvement for Apples iOS App Store, particularly in making it a destination where users can more clearly learn more about applications and trends in the market. "Current app stores do not fully reflect the breadth and richness of apps that are out there," the report states. "They work fine if all you are interested in is the next bestselling game. If, on the other hand, you ar...

Emoji may not be the only pictures appearing in your iOS 8 messages from now on, following the launch of the DrawType keyboard app . The 99c/69p third-party app allows users to sketch out texts from within the Messages app and post them directly to friends, family and colleagues. In order to access the app, it must be installed as an iOS 8 keyboard in the settings menu and then selected from the in-app keyboard options. Users can then complete their drawing and paste it into the iPhone or iPads compose field. Of course, users have been able to paste items from other apps before, but this fully integrated solution may appeal to doodling iOS 8 fans. DrawType ’s creator Theo Watson said the app is designed for a multitude of purposes, for example, replying to a “what’s for dinner?” message with a pizza as shown in the screenshot above, or simply enacting the age old tradition of sending crude phallic doodles to one’s friends. Watson says the functionality of the app may be expanded ...

A jailbreak tool has been released for iOS 8 just over a month after Apple’s latest OS was first officially launched. The new software comes courtesy of Chinese tinkerers Team Pangu, and is the first jailbreak for the iOS 8 . The jailbreak gives anyone with the latest iOS software root admin access to their smartphone, circumcenting Apple’s standard user restrictions. Pangu says its jailbreak will work fine on both iOS 8 and the newly released iOS 8.1 update. The jailbreaker team also recommends backing up your device before you take the root access leap, just in case something goes wrong and causes data loss. Many users are complaining that the jailbreak has come too early, since Cydia software and English language are not currently available. Pangu may have rushed out the jailbreak tool to be remembered as the first hackers to crack the software. It took Team Evasi0n around three months to jailbreak Apple’s iOS 7 last year, although it launched with a much more solid build. It’s als...

Apple recently unveiled its latest mobile operating system for iPhones and iPads  called iOS 7.  The operating system has a brand new look and several new features, but Apple didnt have time to go over all the changes during its big presentation last week. So what  didnt Apple tell us about iOS 7? Weve been using the beta version of the software for a few days now and uncovered a few lesser-known features. Heres what you can look forward to. 1. Apple is experimenting with an easier way to move back a screen in apps. There have been signs that youll be able to use a swiping gesture instead of tapping a "back" button. 2. When you set the timer in the clock app, the countdown appears on your lock screen. Itll also show how much time you have left on your alarm if you hit the snooze. 3. The App Store now has a wish list. This is perfect for situations when you dont want to purchase an app right away but want to remember it. 4. The iCloud keychain was mentioned br...

The next big thing bigger than jailbreak is what Joshua Hill calls the openjailbreak . While shedding light on the term " openjailbreak ",  @posixninja says it wants to bring together all his fragmented codes and exploits into one place where it can be furthe...

Few weeks left before Apple releases the latest iteration of the iPhone top the world, that is, iPhone 5S and 5C and something interesting just popped up. @Winocm, the hacker and coder who tweeted few days back that he had gotten a way to jailbreak both the iPhone 4 and 4S running iOS 6.1.3 just released another pic of an iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.4 with Cydia launched and running as seen in the image below. This jailbreak is for both GSM and CDMA iPhone 5 What does this means? This means that someone had succeeded in jailbreaking the iPhone 4, 4S and 5. iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.4 is jailbroken. Day in day out, people use Apples iMessage service to get in touch and sending of messages. It becomes very easy to totally rely on this means of communication if all friends are iPhone users. consequently it can become very frustrating and alarming if one cant get messages sent through iMessage as its the case lately after iOS 7 upgrade. This problem is due to Apple servers having a hard time activation the iMessage service on troubled devices. To fix this, the following workaround have been offered. 1. Go to Settings/Messages and then check if the phone number and Apple ID mail address displayed is actually the right one. 2. Sign out of the Apple ID and then sign in back or sign in with a totally different Apple ID if you have another one. 3. Now, once you are signed in, toggle iMessage OFF and then a few seconds and then toggle ON again. 4. If this still fails to solve the iMessage issue, go to Settings/General/Reset  and tap on "Reset Network Settings". This will reset al...

Apple released iOS 6.1.2 last week to fix some lingering issues experienced by iPhone 4S and to a lesser degree other iPhone users. Although battery drain issue due to excessive Microsoft exchange communication between the Microsoft server and iDevice was fixed, passcode issue is still there. Consequently, this new update release is just for bug fixes and doesnt really bring any new features to the device. This means that if you dont have battery drain problem and dont care about the Microsoft exchange stuff or dont use it, then you may not go through the hassle of updating. However, if you want to update to iOS 6.1.2 and jailbreak untethered, below is a step by step process which is an excerpt of the more detailed process here. Step 1 Download iOS 6.1.2 using iTunes or at www.idownload.com/iphone-downloads/ if you intend to preserve baseband. To preserve baseband for Gevey unlock, follow this tutorial. Step 2 Update your device to iOS 6.1.2 with iTunes. If you downloaded outside iTune...

It looks like adoption of iOS 7 is continuing to rocket. According to new data from Chitika, one week after its launch the new mobile OS is powering an impressive 52 percent of North American iDevices. More precisely, 51.8 percent of North American Web traffic analyzed by Chitika on Wednesday, Sept. 25 was attributed to an iOS 7-powered iDevice (see above). As such, iOS 7 adoption is continuing to outperform that of iOS 6: last year, seven days into the availability of iOS 6, Chitika notes that a lesser 47.0 percent of iDevice users had upgraded to the new operating system. The first 48 hours. Adoption of iOS 7 overtook that of Android’s latest Jelly Bean update in a matter of hours, and it wasn’t long before more iDevices were running iOS 7,rather than iOS 6. In a recent press release, Apple confirmed that more than 200 million iDevices are now running the seventh iteration of its iOS, making iOS 7 the fastest software upgrade in history. In the same press release, the C...
