iOS 7 adds support for zipped attachments in Mail Messages with Quick Look

Image
Despite all you can do with an iOS device, certain features that are standard on a Mac or PC have been elusive on Apple’s smartphones and tablets. With iOS 7, however, it looks like we can cross one of those omissions off the list: You can now unzip and view compressed files from within Mail. Originally, iOS flat-out ignored zip files—if you received one in an email or viewed it on the web, it showed up as an unrecognized file type, and that was that. But in iOS 4, Apple added the “Open In” function, which let you use third-party apps to open files that the OS couldn’t handle. This let programs like GoodReader handle file unzipping and dealing with other unrecognized document types, but it wasn’t perfect—try explaining to your tech unsavvy friend or family member that they need to download a specific app to open a file. iOS 7 elegantly addresses this problem: Now, when you receive a compressed file in Mail, tapping on it will unzip the file and present it as a series of docume...

Apple Inks Major Sapphire Supply Deal With GT Advanced Technologies

Image
With sapphire now a critical piece of two important iPhone features — in the camera lens across the entire iPhone line and, for the iPhone 5s, in the device’s fingerprint recognition home button — Apple is securing a ready future supply of the material by building an Arizona facility to manufacture it. On Monday, GT Advanced Technologies said it has inked a multi-year agreement with Apple to manufacture sapphire material in Mesa, Arizona. Under the terms of the agreement, GT will purchase and operate the sapphire production equipment that will ultimately be installed in the new Apple plant. In return, Apple is providing GT with prepayments of approximately $578 million, for which GT will reimburse Apple over five years, starting in 2015. “We are proud to expand our domestic manufacturing initiative with a new facility in Arizona, creating more than 2,000 jobs in engineering, manufacturing and construction,” Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet told AllThingsD . “This new plant will make c...

Google Wallet Now Scans Credit Cards With iPhone Camera

Image
Great news for corrupt restaurant employees and criminal scum everywhere: you can now use the latest Google Wallet app to skim credit cards right into your iPhone. In theory at least. And without actually recording the magnetic strip. But “Google Wallet update allows easy addition of credit cards using the iPhone camera” doesn’t have the same link-baiting ring to it. So scum and villainy it is. Google Wallet is best described by Google’s own “about” page: Google Wallet is a free service that lets you securely store your payment information, transaction history, offers and more. Everything’s synced to the cloud – giving you one wallet on any device you use, for in-store and online shopping. This is either amazing or terrifying, depending on your level of paranoia. I have been systematically quitting Google services over the last few months, so you can guess where I come on that scale. Then again, I use cash for most transactions, so I really can’t be trusted. Then latest update lets you...

The iPad Pro might come with an optional stylus

Image
Rumors about Apple stylus own lead in the air for years now, probably, and even though they have never materialized, the fact is that there are a number of signs that indicate it is something that the company has been really working and could definitely become a reality in the coming months, curiously, as another accessory projects we waiting longer to see the light: iPad Pro (or iPad Air Plus, as it seems you could end up calling).  A stylus for iPad Pro?  The forecast comes from Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the specialized analysts in Apple most reputed, so it’s worth paying attention to. Neither seems a particularly risky prediction, in any case, if we consider that the iPad Pro would be aimed at professional use tablet and a stylus is a fixture as usual in them, since it is one of the most useful tools which can complement a tablet to increase productivity. Kuo does not believe, however, that the stylus is included directly in the pack, but probably be sold separately to not increase too m...

The Xiaomi Redmi 2 is one of the most interesting phones that can be purchased at the beginning of this year because, for an unbeatable price, we will have a similar but less than terminal hardware and Moto G.
