Android Modding 101 what you need to know about rooting your phone

Image
"Just root it" is something youve probably heard said if youve spent any meaningful time hanging around a hardcore Android user. But, unless youve spent too much time lingering in the darker corners of the internet, you probably get lost when people start comparing ROMs. As Android phones have taken off, rooting (the process of getting super access to your phone, and being able to change it as you see fit) has become an increasingly mainstream thing to do. The driving factor behind this is the manufacturers: to stamp their own seal on devices, big Android smartphone makers like Samsung, HTC and Sony put a skin on top of the regular Android OS, changing the look and feel, and often replacing stock Android apps with changed varieties. In the first case, then, some users dont appreciate the bloatware – theyd rather have a clean, unskinned version of Android, as they often run faster, and Googles apps are arguably superior to the manufacturers offerings. In our weekly column on crowdfunded projects, we look at sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo to find new and interesting projects. How to Make your Own USB On The Go OTG cable

Image
In order for your Android phone or tablet to host a USB device such as an Arduino, you need a USB On-The-Go (OTG) cable. You can buy these for a few bucks online, but if you have old USB cables around it’s more fun to make one!  Step 1: All you need are two donor USB cables, one with a female type A end like you’d find on a USB extension cable (shown in the first photo here) and one with a male micro B end (second photo). When you’re finished, you’ll have a cable that plugs into your phone on one side and accepts a standard USB cable on the other. First, cut your 2 donor cables to expose the red, black, white, and green wires within, and strip the insulation off the tips. Match up the wire colors from both sides of your soon-to-be Frankencable and solder them together. Insulate the soldered joints from each other using shrink tubing, electrical tape, or hot glue. Don’t forget to connect the braided shielding as well — that’s the uninsulated stranded wire that surrounds the 4 colore...

Image
BlackBerry have released an update to their popular BBM app for Android and iPhone. According to Jeff Gardaway, head of product and brand marketing for BBM, BBM now includes a new Find Friends feature that allows you to discover people you know that are also using BBM and invite them to your BBM contact list, from within the app.  The Find Friends feature will detect which contacts in your smartphone’s contact list are already using BBM, and allow you to quickly send them an invite to join your BBM contact list. For those contacts that don’t yet have BBM, you can invite them to download the app with an email or SMS invite. This is not a bad development and update from BlackBerry.
