Google acquired the designer and manufacturer of home products Nest Labs. The search engine giant paid $3.2 billion in cash for the Palo Alto-based company.  Founded in 2010, Nest brings modern design and functionality to ubiquitous home products. The company has a learning thermostat and a carbon monoxide & smoke detector currently on sale. Both gadgets connect with Android and iOS devices to enhance their usual functionality. Nest will continue to operate with its own brand, under the leadership of its founder and current CEO Tony Fadell. Google is yet to announce its plans for Nest Labs, though some sort of home implementation seems more than likely. The acquisition is expected to close in the next few months after the usual round of regulatory approvals.

You can download the advanced camera and photo editing app for free via just a short trip to the Apple Store app. iPhone users looking for a more versatile and powerful camera app than Apples default one can now grab a good one for free. Camera+ normally sells for $3 in Apples App Store. For a limited time , though, Apple is offering the app for free through its Apple Store app, as spotted by the folks at RazorianFly on Monday. Camera+ provides a variety of controls beyond the basic ones outfitted into the built-in Camera app. You can manually set the focus and exposure through onscreen wheels. Moving the wheels around the screen quickly and easily adjusts either feature. You can also tweak both the focus and exposure by opening and swiping across a slider grid at the bottom. Other exposure effects appear at the bottom, so you can simply choose a daylight setting, a fluorescent setting, a candlelight setting and more in order to achieve a certain look to your photo. Aesthetics have never been the strong suit of Samsungs TouchWiz UI -- features are. For a very long time, weve been rather displeased with the looks of the custom interface, and we suspect many would agree, especially now that essentially every major manufacturer on the planet has moved towards flatter looks, making older interfaces feel... well, dated. One of the most popular Samsung smartphones that is a prisoner of its own time is the otherwise amazing Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The UI just looks bland in comparison with what the competition now has to offer, and even when put side-by-side with the newer Galaxy S5. Unfortunately, while the Note 3 has moved onto Android 4.4 KitKat, it does not seem like Samsung is planning on updating the Note 3 with the new visuals. As it turns out however, thats not specific to the Note line, but rather -- the Note 3 itself. Proof for that are the refreshed, more vibrant UIs of the newly-announced Note 4 and Note Edge. Indeed, while some would argue th...

During its big event today, Apple announced a lot of new things as you may already know – the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus, and the Apple Watch. But besides all of that, the company also shared a big stat relating to its iTunes App Store. This, it turns out, now has more than 1.3 million apps for iOS in it. Last we heard anything about Apple’s app numbers, the 1 million milestone was hit – in October of last year. Thus, it’s probably safe to say that growth in app numbers for the iOS store is slowing down, but at this level that’s to be expected. Let’s wait and see when the 1.5 million number will be reached.

Introduction We venture again into the realm of phablets, one that at the beginning seemed to promise little more than a short burst of action, has become the scene of some of the most thrilling battles this industry has seen. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 emerged from every battle without so much as a scratch. The lineup has defined the segment and the third generation is an impressive all-rounder with rock-solid still imaging, probably the best video a phone can produce, processing power to spare and plenty of value-adding software features.
