A Bluetooth Hub That Turns Your Phone Into a Universal Remote

Image
In our weekly column on crowdfunded projects, we look at sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo to find new and interesting projects. Thats because in the last couple of years, some of the most exciting developments in technology have come not from the established players, but from small teams with big dreams - like the Pebble smartwatch and the Oculus Rift. One project hoping to make it big is the AnyMote Home - this small IR device can connect to your smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth, where a companion app can be used as a smart remote. The AnyMote has profiles of over 800,000 devices, and the makers say they are still adding more. Theres also a learning function, where you can teach it to recognise other IR remotes that are not already supported. The app can also integrate with services that support Wi-Fi, such as XBMC, Sonos and Roku. The way it works is simple - you just launch the app on your phone or tablet (both iOS and Android are supported), and connect to the...

TCL considers purchasing a stake in HTC

Image
TCL Chairman Li Dongsheng has a post on his Weibo account in which he hints a possible tie-up between his company and HTC. In the post, Dongsheng expresses his admiration for Cher Wang, founder and chairman of HTC and suggests that both companies could pose a serious threat to the likes of Apple and Samsung. This isnt the first time TCLs Chairman hints at operations behind the scenes in this Weibo account. Previously, he noted made a small indication of TCLs partnership with Baidu on the TV front. Back in 2004, TCL invested €55 million in Alcatels phonemaking business in return of 55% shareholding and a year later bought the remaining 45% for $8.1 million. Now, 9 years later, Alcatel is doing nicely and showcased some great smartphones at IFA 2014. HTCs latest quarter results show the company only managed to return a profit thanks to tightening its belt and cutting costs. Similarly to what it did with Alcatel, TCL could invest a considerable amount of money in HTC resulting in the ...

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge brings a unique two sided display

Image
The Note family added a second new phablet today, the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. The name isnt random, the right edge of the screen folds to cover the side of the device and enable unique interactions. So, not the three-sided screen of the rumors but two sides are unique enough.       Samsung Galaxy Note Edge official images The Galaxy Note Edge is based on the Galaxy Note 4 internally, but its the screen that makes all the difference. The folded side adds an extra 160 pixels so the resolution grows to 1,600 x 2,560 (the highest on a pocketable device yet if you keep note on those things) but it also makes the Galaxy Note Edge a bit wider than its straight-screened sibling. Samsung has added enough smarts to the curved side that accidental touches to it are not a problem. With the phone locked, the curved side can display the Quick Glance info (time and notifications). When you wake the screen, the side displays notifications for various features, including timer and ...

A cable with micro-USB / Now it was unable to connect my wireless mouse to the tablet, I wonder whether it manages to transfer the images from the USB stick. The iPad Air Plus could include a novel Stylus

Image
Apple went last 4th December to the Patent and Trademark US to register your new idea, a Stylus. It is not the first time that the Cupertino Company is working on one of these tools but until today, none of its six generations of tablets has included. With the iPad Air Plus (until recently known as iPad Pro) on the horizon, a device for professional use we have been talking for many months, it seems obvious that both news could be related.  The paper presented at the American entity describes “a stylus with architecture for signal detection and demodulation which allows synchronization between the stylus and the screen”. What is surprising is that the patent is dated to December 4, indicating that this is accessories that have been prepared in recent months.  For some reason, Apple has believed all along that a stylus was not necessary for any of its iPads whatever their size, therefore, no reason to believe that future generations of iPad Air 2 may include, leaving us tray more feasib...

The new iPhone 5C is a really bad buy

Image
Imagine. Youre buying something exciting and expensive. The sales person makes you an offer. You can have 1/8 off the sticker price if you agree to just one thing: from time to time, the sales person would come round to your house and punch you in the face. The new iPhones and iPads are a bit like that. Apple has made the iPhone 5C cheaper and its brought the iPad 4 back from the dead, and in both cases its selling them with lower amounts of storage: 16GB in the case of the cheapest iPad and just 8GB in the lowest-cost iPhone 5C . 8GB ? My email signatures bigger than that. Size matters Okay, not really. But despite my best efforts to export my photos and videos, my ruthless culling of infrequently used apps, my diligent deletion of read messages and mail and my streaming from iTunes Match and Spotify, Ive still got 23GB of stuff on my iPhone and even more on my iPad. If youre reading this, youre clearly into tech. Youre an HD-shooting, app-using, downloading-for-offli...

Google Inbox is a new app that combines Gmail and Google Now

Image
Google wants to change how you use email. Again  Googles new Inbox app has been released on an invite-only basis - ring any bells Gmail fans? But 10 years on from Gmails launch, has Google finally found the solution to inbox clutter? Inbox takes the approach that - by organizing your emails intuitively - the clutter is kept in the background. The backdrop to this, of course, is that were getting more emails than ever. Were contributing to that every day by doing things like emailing ourselves reminders and asking for newsletters we never read. Inbox cant solve that, but it can make things more manageable. Inbox takes its cues from a multitude of third-party apps including Dropboxs Mailbox and Boomerang as well as some nifty Google Now integration. Theres plenty to see here and, while its tempting to call it a beta, it really isnt and Google says as much in the limited documentation it supplied to us. The standard Google design language is used, and it works extremely flui...

Motorola Moto 360 to get a gold version soon

Image
The Motorola Moto 360 is the most sought after smartwatch currently on the market and chances it will remain like this at least until the IFA-announced devices hit the shelves. However the US company is hoping its first smart wearable will retain its popularity even after that and is ready to spice it up a bit to achieve it. Motorola posted the following picture on its official website, showing the Moto 360 in three different colors – black, silver and gold. The smartwatch is currently only offered in silver and black, so it could either be a mistake by someone on the Motorola design team, or simply a case of someone jumping the gun on an upcoming announcement. The series of events that came after the image was published makes us strongly believe that it’s a case of the latter, though. After the guys from  Android Police  noticed the promo image, they immediately contacted Motorola for comment. The immediate response? The image was replaced with the one you see on the left bel...
