iPhone 6 Renderings Based on Case leaks and Recent Rumors

Image
Earlier this month French Apple website Nowhereelse.fr shown off a set renderings show sapphire glass-backed iPhone Air, that based on alleged schematics for a 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch iPhone 6. Martin Hajeks  iPhone Air concept. The same designer Martin Hajek created again a new set renders for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, based on recent case leaks, that show a thin, edge-to-edge design, and accompanying cases in a variety of colors. The renderings show thin iPhone with rounded corners, with the power button located along the upper right side of the device and rectangular volume controls similar to that of the fifth-generation iPod touch. The back of the device is shown to be uni-colored, as compared to the iPhone 5s’ two-toned design. The case rendered to compliment the phone also contains cutouts for each new design change, along with holes for the camera and flash. Rendering above appear the 4-inch, and 5.5 inch iPhones, with same design properties as the 4.7-inch version. Apple is expec

National Geographic Photographer Praises iPhone 5s Camera

Image
National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson took his iPhone 5s to Scotland and, after taking 4,000 photographs, called the camera on the device "very capable" with pictures that "didn’t look like I was having to settle for second best because it was a mobile phone". Apples Phil Schiller tweeted a link to the article this evening, commenting "iPhoneography". With intense use (I’ve made about 4,000 pictures in the last four days) I’ve discovered that the iPhone 5S is a very capable camera. The color and exposures are amazingly good, the HDR exposure feature does a stunningly good job in touch situations, the panorama feature is nothing short of amazing—seeing a panorama sweeping across the screen in real time is just intoxicating. Best of all it shoots square pictures natively, a real plus for me since I wanted to shoot for Instagram posting. Once I figured out what the camera could do well I began to forget all the things it couldn’t do at all. While the

iOS 7 adds support for zipped attachments in Mail Messages with Quick Look

Image
Despite all you can do with an iOS device, certain features that are standard on a Mac or PC have been elusive on Apple’s smartphones and tablets. With iOS 7, however, it looks like we can cross one of those omissions off the list: You can now unzip and view compressed files from within Mail. Originally, iOS flat-out ignored zip files—if you received one in an email or viewed it on the web, it showed up as an unrecognized file type, and that was that. But in iOS 4, Apple added the “Open In” function, which let you use third-party apps to open files that the OS couldn’t handle. This let programs like GoodReader handle file unzipping and dealing with other unrecognized document types, but it wasn’t perfect—try explaining to your tech unsavvy friend or family member that they need to download a specific app to open a file. iOS 7 elegantly addresses this problem: Now, when you receive a compressed file in Mail, tapping on it will unzip the file and present it as a series of documents that

Broadcom Announces New 5G 802 11ac 2x2 MIMO Chip Will Likely Power Future iPhone

Image
Communications chip maker Broadcom announced a first of its kind 5G WiFi Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system-on-a-chip that will bring faster 802.11ac connectivity with 2x2 MIMO to mobile devices. The Broadcom BCM4354 chip  is the first to implement 2×2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) on a smartphone, bringing up to twice the Wi-Fi performance with 25 percent more power efficiency than the current 1x1 MIMO chips. Consumers expect a fast, always-on smartphone experience. Performance however can be degraded by many factors including how a phone is held or positioned. In the past, MIMO systems have solved these problems on tablets and larger devices by using multiple antennas. With Broadcom’s advanced antenna and PHY design, the BCM4354 can now deliver the benefits of 5G WiFi 2×2 MIMO to smaller platform designs like smartphones while reducing implementation complexity for designers. This achievement enables the industry’s first practical implementation of 2×2 MIMO on a sm

Analyst Says iPhone 6 Design Locked Down with 4 8 Inch Display and 802 11ac Wi Fi

Image
iPhone 6 concept. latest predictions has been claimed that a larger iPhone will come with 4.7. But New analyst Timothy Arcuri of Cowen and Company (via AppleInsider ) today has issued a note to investors claiming that much of the design for the iPhone 6 has been finalized, He said that Apple selceted 4.8-inch display for the iPhone 6. Arcuri also predicts that the next-generation iPhone will come with 802.11ac, a faster Wi-Fi standard that first began appearing in Apple products in 2013. In addition to these changes, Arcuri went on to suggest that Apple will offer "key software innovations" in 2014 with iBeacon, Touch ID, and Passbook used as a mobile payment solution. He views the iPhone 5s as basically a set-up for this years new products. Its 64-bit A7 processor and Touch ID fingerprint sensor will allow Apple to introduce new services. Aside from hardware tweaks and design changes, Arcuri also said that Apple is planning "key software innovations" with the next

Apple could sell up to 8M iPhone 5s and 5c units over launch weekend analyst says

Image
While many market watchers are concerned that Apple has not announced preorder numbers for the iPhone 5c and may face supply constraints with the iPhone 5s, one analyst believes launch weekend sales will blow past last years record setting iPhone 5 performance. According to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apples silence may simply be a strategy to conceal the exact iPhone 5s and 5c sales breakdown from competitors, and does not necessarily mean preorders for the plastic shelled device are weak. In fact, Kuo said in a note to investors on Wednesday that Apple will likely ship 6 to 8 million new iPhones over the devices first weekend of sales. By comparison, Apple racked up 5 million sales when the iPhone 5 debuted last year. Earlier in the day, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster forecast 5 to 6 million unit sales, a more conservative number based on the prior models in-store launch sales. Kuo believes Apple wont show its hand until the launch weekend is over, combining total iPhone 5s and 5c

Report Bezel Free Display One of the iPhone 6 Attributes

The report focusing on the next generation iPhone and Samsungs Galaxy. There are not significant details about the future iPhone in the report, contrary the Galaxy S5, just few sentences noting that Apple is working on a "similar" prototype with bezel-free display and fingerprint sensor. The report also claims that the next Galaxy phone will be even slimmer, as Samsung plans to use a new panel technology that would further trim the depth of the phone. “Scanning fingerprints on the entire screen, which was much talked about recently, will be available in the latter half of this year as there are still technological hurdles to overcome,” [the source] added, hinting that the production yield for the full-screen fingerprint scanner is still far from satisfactory. The source said that Samsung’s top rival Apple is also testing a sim

Inside Apples A7 Chip M7 Motion Coprocessor and More from the iPhone 5s

Image
At its media event introducing the new iPhones earlier this month, Apple highlighted several chip innovations included on the iPhone 5s including a new A7 main chip with one billion transistors and a smaller M7 "motion coprocessor" designed to efficiently measure accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass data and thus allow for enhanced fitness tracking , navigation, and more. Chipworks and iFixit have now posted a teardown revealing whats inside these chips, as well as several other components of the iPhone 5s, offering an interesting first glimpse at these components at the heart of the device. In looking at the A7, Chipworks noted that it is indeed manufactured by Samsung using its 28-nm process node. Apple has been seeking to shift its A-series chip production from Samsung to TSMC, but TSMCs chip production will reportedly not start until early 2014. Apple Tops List Of World’s Most Valuable Brands Again!

Image
Apple has topped the list of world’s most valuable brands for the third straight year in a row, and is now worth almost twice as much as any other brand on the planet, Forbes reports. The Cupertino company is now valued at $104.3 billion, up 20 percent over last year, which puts it way out in front of Microsoft, Samsung, and even Google. It’s all thanks to increasing iPhone and iPad sales, and the continued success of services like iTunes. Apple sold a record 33.8 million iPhones last quarter, as well as 14.1 million iPads and 4.6 million Macs . iPod sales continued to decline, but Apple still sold 3.5 million of them during the three-month period, and 26.4 million over the year. As a result, it secures the top spot in Forbes’ list of most valuable brands for the third year in a row. Microsoft takes second place in the list with a brand worth $56.7 billion — $47.6 less than Apple’s — but its value is flat over the past three years due to its struggle to make a mark in the mobile world

TSMC Begins Apples A8 Chip Production for iPhone 6

Image
Last week a report from Taiwans Commercial Times picked up by AFP claimed that Apple new chip partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has begun production on the next-generation A8 chip destined for the iPhone 6 later this year. The worlds leading contract microchip maker last month started producing the A8 chip, which is tipped to power the expected iPhone 6, the Commercial Times reported. The report, which cited supply chain sources, said TSMC had won most of the manufacturing orders for logic and power management integrated chips for the new handset. The Apple A8 will reportedly be manufactured using the 20 nanometer and will include a quad-core 64-bit processor, also quad core graphics. An earlier start to chips production could give Apple the flexibility to comfortably launch the new iPhone in the third quarter of this year contrary to the previous years. Usually in the past Samsung is the sole Apples manufacturing partner for A-series chips, but Apple has lo

Apples iOS App Store still handily trumps Google Amazon offerings in new analysis

Image
The three digital download destinations were pitted against one another in the Pfeiffer Reports "2013 App Store Maturity Shootout." All three stores were compared in four key categories: search, discovery assistance, an evaluation grid maturity score, and user experience friction. When the overall results for each mobile application store were tallied by Pfeiffer, Apple was the clear top choice, earning a score of 53.1 out of 100. That handily beat Google Play, which scored 40.9, as well as the Amazon Appstore, coming in with a score of 34.1. Pfeiffer still sees a great deal of room for improvement for Apples iOS App Store, particularly in making it a destination where users can more clearly learn more about applications and trends in the market. "Current app stores do not fully reflect the breadth and richness of apps that are out there," the report states. "They work fine if all you are interested in is the next bestselling game. If, on the other hand, you ar

Apple Inks Major Sapphire Supply Deal With GT Advanced Technologies

Image
With sapphire now a critical piece of two important iPhone features — in the camera lens across the entire iPhone line and, for the iPhone 5s, in the device’s fingerprint recognition home button — Apple is securing a ready future supply of the material by building an Arizona facility to manufacture it. On Monday, GT Advanced Technologies said it has inked a multi-year agreement with Apple to manufacture sapphire material in Mesa, Arizona. Under the terms of the agreement, GT will purchase and operate the sapphire production equipment that will ultimately be installed in the new Apple plant. In return, Apple is providing GT with prepayments of approximately $578 million, for which GT will reimburse Apple over five years, starting in 2015. “We are proud to expand our domestic manufacturing initiative with a new facility in Arizona, creating more than 2,000 jobs in engineering, manufacturing and construction,” Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet told AllThingsD . “This new plant will make c

Nearly All Mobile Device Makers Cheat on Benchmarks Except Apple and Motorola

Image
Following Tuesdays report that Samsung artificially inflates its benchmarking scores, well-respected hardware review site AnandTech has published evidence suggesting nearly all mobile manufacturers, with the exception of Apple and Motorola, use CPU/GPU optimizations to game benchmark tests.  Samsung and other OEMs use a variety of methods to enhance device performance when a benchmark is detected. For example, with its Galaxy S 4 Samsung raised its thermal limits (and max GPU frequency) to get an edge on certain benchmarks and also raised its CPU voltage/frequency to its highest state when a benchmark was sensed, a tactic engaged by multiple manufacturers like LG, HTC, and ASUS as well. In the table below, Anandtech highlights devices that detect benchmarks and immediately respond with max CPU frequency. With the exception of Apple and Motorola, literally every single OEM we’ve worked with ships (or has shipped) at least one device that runs this silly CPU optimization. It’s possible

Anki will also be holding a series of special events at prominent Apple Retail Store locations around North America ove

Samsung spies on iPhone launch lines to pierce Apple mystique

Image
First Guy In Line At An Apple Store In Germany AP. Samsungs commercials may make fun of Apple fans waiting in lines for the next iDevice, but the South Korean tech giant may not be above trying to figure out just what drives those fans to queue up hours and days in advance. As Apple fans lined up to get the new generation of iPhone, the Cupertino companys chief rival sent a video and photography crew to document the lines at Apples flagship Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan. Their goal according to CNET : figuring out what had those customers so excited that they would stand in line for hours — even days — to be the first to get their hands on a new phone. "Other companies release new phones, but theres not as much passion and heat," one Samsung operative said. "Its only Apple. Why? Were curious." Reportedly, the crew only documented the scene in front of the Fifth Avenue store, occasionally asking line-sitters questions: "Is the line shorter or longer this year

Google Wallet Now Scans Credit Cards With iPhone Camera

Image
Great news for corrupt restaurant employees and criminal scum everywhere: you can now use the latest Google Wallet app to skim credit cards right into your iPhone. In theory at least. And without actually recording the magnetic strip. But “Google Wallet update allows easy addition of credit cards using the iPhone camera” doesn’t have the same link-baiting ring to it. So scum and villainy it is. Google Wallet is best described by Google’s own “about” page: Google Wallet is a free service that lets you securely store your payment information, transaction history, offers and more. Everything’s synced to the cloud – giving you one wallet on any device you use, for in-store and online shopping. This is either amazing or terrifying, depending on your level of paranoia. I have been systematically quitting Google services over the last few months, so you can guess where I come on that scale. Then again, I use cash for most transactions, so I really can’t be trusted. Then latest update lets you

iPhone app alerts you when sickness is nearby

Image
Sickweather has launched a mobile app for the iPhone that will send a push notification to your iPhone when you enter a sick zone: areas near reports of illness gathered from social media. Its the first app of its kind to leverage big data from social media, along with Apple iOSs geofencing and notification technologies, to serve health alerts. Heres how it works: When someone publicly posts Ugh, I have the flu on Twitter or Facebook, Sickweather qualifies that report using a patent-pending process and then plots it on a map. When a Sickweather app user travels near that report (whether they are dropping kids off at school, traveling for the holidays, or stopping in their favorite cafe for a cup of coffee) they will get a real-time alert notification on their phone warning them of their proximity to flu. Sickweather 1.0 for iOS 7 allows you to view reports of up to 23 different symptoms and illnesses on a map, as well as four groups of illnesses related to Respiratory, Gastrointesti

Coin The Electronic Credit Card Reaches Its Pre Order Goal In 40 Minutes

Image
We are, I believe, in an interstitial zone when it comes to payments. Credit cards are still king – just ask Square – and NFC is just a dream in most countries. That’s why Coin is so interesting. It’s a credit-card-sized device that holds other credit cards, allowing you to swap from card to card and even store gift cards inside its ultra-thin innards. The company planned a pre-order campaign that would top out at $50,000. They blew past that goal in 40 minutes today, a testament to the desire for folks to leave their plastic at home. The card itself is as thin as a regular credit card. To use the card you select a payment type with the button and just swipe. The Coin card “mimics” your read credit or gift card. The technology is tightly packed inside the card’s plastic case. It uses low-power Bluetooth to connect to your iOS device that is coupled with a standard credit-card reader. You swipe your cards into the system and you’re done. The device holds up to eight cards. Engineer Kani
