Android Modding 101 what you need to know about rooting your phone

Image
"Just root it" is something youve probably heard said if youve spent any meaningful time hanging around a hardcore Android user. But, unless youve spent too much time lingering in the darker corners of the internet, you probably get lost when people start comparing ROMs. As Android phones have taken off, rooting (the process of getting super access to your phone, and being able to change it as you see fit) has become an increasingly mainstream thing to do. The driving factor behind this is the manufacturers: to stamp their own seal on devices, big Android smartphone makers like Samsung, HTC and Sony put a skin on top of the regular Android OS, changing the look and feel, and often replacing stock Android apps with changed varieties. In the first case, then, some users dont appreciate the bloatware – theyd rather have a clean, unskinned version of Android, as they often run faster, and Googles apps are arguably superior to the manufacturers offerings. But ski...

Vertu Aster mates premium materials to high end Android

Image
The new Moto X may have a metal frame and leather back options but it has nothing on the new Vertu Aster. The Aster is a more affordable (by Vertu standards) version of the Signature Touch. Besides the titanium and sapphire, the Aster features a hand-polished ruby key – a gem chosen both for its looks and its durability. For the back you have a choice of Calf leather (Onyx, Lagoon, Blush), Karung snake skin (Caviar, Tangerine, Raspberry) and Cognac Ostrich. The Android smartphone is hand-crafted in England from hardened titanium. It has a 4.7" 1080p screen guarded by sapphire crystal, surrounded by front-facing stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus tuning. The main camera is a 13MP Hasselblad-tuned shooter with dual-LED flash similar to the Signature Touch camera. Theres also a 2.1MP front-facing camera, both back and front camera lenses are guarded by sapphire. The Vertu Aster is no slouch in smartphone terms either, it runs a modern Android 4.4 KitKat and on fast Snapdragon 80...

Image
It turns out that the international version of the LG G2 might not be getting an update to Android 4.4 KitKat this month. In a new tweet, LG Mobile Saudi Arabia apologized for releasing wrong information earlier today. We apologize for the previous wrong tweet regarding G2 Kit Kat upgrade schedule, the date was for upgrading the KnockOn feature to Lii series — LG Mobile Saudi (@LGMobileSaudi) January 15, 2014 Instead of Android 4.4 KitKat for the company’s smartphone flagship, LG Mobile Saudi Arabia announced that the popular Knock feature will make its way to the second generation of L Series smartphones. In the meantime, this walkthrough video of Android 4.4 on LG G2 should give them a taste of what’s coming.

Sony Xperia Z3 launcher ported to Android 4 2 Xperias

Image
Sony unveiled the new Xperia Z3 on Wednesday, which brought some improvements over the Xperia Z2. The changes weren’t groundbreaking though (the 6-month update schedule means smaller upgrades) and now Z2 owners have even less to feel envious about since the Xperia Z3 launcher and widgets have been ported to Android 4.2 and above. Owners of other Sony smartphones can join the party too, it’s not a flagship-only event. The ported launcher will work on both rooted and non-rooted phones. The installation process if fairly simple – remove the current Home.apk from /system/app and install the new one as a regular app. Alternatively, you can move the APK file to /system/app, just don’t forget to give it rw-r–r– permissions (requires SuperUser Mod). Note that if you go the no-root way stock widgets will not work, the status and nav bars will not be transparent either. The launcher and widgets work on Android 4.2 and up but a port to Android 4.1 should be out soon. If possible the...
