MURMER GADGET

The three digital download destinations were pitted against one another in the Pfeiffer Reports "2013 App Store Maturity Shootout." All three stores were compared in four key categories: search, discovery assistance, an evaluation grid maturity score, and user experience friction. When the overall results for each mobile application store were tallied by Pfeiffer, Apple was the clear top choice, earning a score of 53.1 out of 100. That handily beat Google Play, which scored 40.9, as well as the Amazon Appstore, coming in with a score of 34.1. Pfeiffer still sees a great deal of room for improvement for Apples iOS App Store, particularly in making it a destination where users can more clearly learn more about applications and trends in the market. "Current app stores do not fully reflect the breadth and richness of apps that are out there," the report states. "They work fine if all you are interested in is the next bestselling game. If, on the other hand, you ar...

Sickweather has launched a mobile app for the iPhone that will send a push notification to your iPhone when you enter a sick zone: areas near reports of illness gathered from social media. Its the first app of its kind to leverage big data from social media, along with Apple iOSs geofencing and notification technologies, to serve health alerts. Heres how it works: When someone publicly posts Ugh, I have the flu on Twitter or Facebook, Sickweather qualifies that report using a patent-pending process and then plots it on a map. When a Sickweather app user travels near that report (whether they are dropping kids off at school, traveling for the holidays, or stopping in their favorite cafe for a cup of coffee) they will get a real-time alert notification on their phone warning them of their proximity to flu. Sickweather 1.0 for iOS 7 allows you to view reports of up to 23 different symptoms and illnesses on a map, as well as four groups of illnesses related to Respiratory, Gastrointesti...

During its big event today, Apple announced a lot of new things as you may already know – the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus, and the Apple Watch. But besides all of that, the company also shared a big stat relating to its iTunes App Store. This, it turns out, now has more than 1.3 million apps for iOS in it. Last we heard anything about Apple’s app numbers, the 1 million milestone was hit – in October of last year. Thus, it’s probably safe to say that growth in app numbers for the iOS store is slowing down, but at this level that’s to be expected. Let’s wait and see when the 1.5 million number will be reached.

Imagine streaming video from your Android phone to the web at the click of a button — no Wi-Fi needed, no painful upload times, no maneuvering back and forth between a handful of apps to shoot and share your video. Its Android app is available for download right now (an iPhone app is in the works) and lets users stream live video recorded on their Android devices directly to the Justin.tv website. Facebook and Twitter sharing are built in (and opt-in for each video). The app works great on a 3G connection, so you wont have to wait for Wi-Fi to get your videos live online. Each video that you stream will be recorded and saved forever at the same URL as your live broadcast, and the video is live and saved online as soon as you hit the apps red recording button, regardless of what might happen to you or your device during the shoot. The apps creators see it as a great tool for average users who want to be able to take the power of mobile video...
